AMRAVATI: The officials of the Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company Ltd detected Rs 2 lakh power theft at Pathrot on Tuesday.
The accused customers—most of them being farmers—were caught red-handed drawing power illegally for the borewells in farms.
The water level in farm wells has gone substantially down owing to summer, resulting in water shortage for use in the fields.

So, the farmers decided to deepen the borewells on their farms and illegally drew power for
the purpose.
Vinod Bethariya, chief engineer, MSEDCL, Achalpur, learnt about the power theft by farmers for deepening borewells.
Accordingly, a team of MSEDCL officials comprising Ramesh Thakre, junior engineer, Jitesh Gajbhiye, Ram Kelkar (linemen) raided Pathrot in a pre-planned exercise under his guidance.
The Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company Ltd team caught farmers from Pathrot near Achalpur including Sunil Patokar, Rajesh Newale, Ritest Newale and Vilas Khalokar red-handed drawing illegal power.
